Twitter drifting further into deserved irrelevance. Soon, people will be leaving not solely because of the hate but because it has ceased to be a place with any particular utility unless you enjoy yelling into a far-right echo chamber governed by an increasingly ridiculous oligarch.#twitter #musk #antiracismhttps://lnkd.in/e4ffuT3Q

Obviously this can't come soon enough, but the lack of a clear alternative has been a real hindrance. LinkedIn is not really a substitute for the rapid, news-based nature of (the original) Twitter. Ironically when I was looking for micro-updates on the racist riots and counter-protests, it was X I found myself looking at (which, yes, did mean wading through sh*t). A few years ago there was move towards Mastodon but it was too geeky and didn't really catch on. BlueSky may be the best chance now, though there's competition from Meta's Threads. Normally plurality/competition would be a good thing, but in this case the network effect means we need one to dominate. In an ideal world it wouldn't be an unaccountable private company susceptible to a Musk-style takeover, and BlueSky is at least a public benefit corporation.

I’m sure Musk won’t lose a winks sleep knowing Labour MPs are quitting X. Remind me how many people, from all races & religions, worldwide does Elon Musk directly employ and how many indirectly rely on his businesses. Is it a fair fight when, 1) In one corner you have Elon Musk, one of the worlds wealthiest self made men, while in the other corner you have the ‘rag tag’ bag of Labour Party MPs..2) A wealth creator and aspiration enhancer versus basket load of wealth wasters and aspiration deflators. Good luck with that one.

It’s strange to watch network effects going into reverse.

Absolutely true, I no longer get any networking or information from twitter/X, unlike linked in which is thriving and has taken on the utility that twitter once had. You also get to create longer posts and share media in more thoughtful ways than on twitter/X.

Market forces at work. Elon can try to sue advertisers, he can't sue users though. Put your tears away Musk.

Isn’t it time the BBC introduced some balance into their reporting of economic growth? Surely they should make an effort to reflect the clear evidence and growing public opinion that growth is not an unqualified good or universally accepted policy goal. Growth may bring jobs and potentially higher material living standards but it also means an increase in the plundering of the natural world which is undermining those very benefits and causing many other problems. This is an increasingly mainstream view which deserves to sit alongside quotes from those who hold the increasingly questioned pro-growth perspective.#economics #degrowth #mediahttps://lnkd.in/euJEeVUJ

Are the most impactful healthcare innovations anarchist? This is such a great post from Deborah Fenney on how core anarchist principles like self-organisation, mutual aid, co-operation and flat structures have shaped some powerful initiatives in healthcare over the years. As a bit of an anarchist myself (OK, more than a bit!), I obviously love this perspective. But you don’t need to be an anarchist to be inspired by the idea that people collectively shaping and delivering healthcare for themselves can be hugely empowering and effective. And, as Deborah points out, that doesn’t imply health professionals withdrawing support from those that need it. It simply means providing it in a different, more respectful and empowering way.As the blog says: “where many of us often feel like things happen outside of our control, perhaps anarchist ideas could help us to understand and maximise the power we do have to act, not as individual heroes, but together.” I think this is an idea that applies not just to those outside the healthcare system but also those working in it. There is way too much faith placed in the power of the individual technical expert and the senior manager and way too little in the efficacy of grassroots collaborative effort involving patients, families, public servants from non-health backgrounds, and communities. #nhs #healthcare #health #publicservices #localgov #anarchism Simon Parker Matthew Skinner Dominic Campbell Katie Kelly Amanda Askham Andy Knox Jessica Studdert https://lnkd.in/etC6bpdk

There is one thing we can thank both Trump and Musk for: they repeatedly undermine any belief that it necessarily requires intelligence to become very rich and powerful. Both stone cold idiots who reveal the dirty truth: great wealth and power is more often than not the result of ruthless amorality and the exploitation of the abilities of others (and, of course, a hefty inheritance from daddy).#trump #musk #wealth https://lnkd.in/etEugfYg

“Many of our systems, designed in the name of efficiency, are anything but. We have set up processes designed for the canning of baked beans rather than helping improve lives. We need a new vocabulary and new process that restores humanity to the system. One that centres on people, communities, relationships, and dreams. One that focuses on strengths and possibilities, not labels and limitations.”I see this repeatedly from the most impactful public sector innovators: ditching the counterproductive efficiency mindset and instead focusing on providing the best, most holistic, human care. Which, rather unsurprisingly, improves health and happiness and therefore cuts waiting lists as a positive by-product rather than main goal.Very good from Paul Taylor . Am I alone in feeling that the world is drifting into an insane spiral of self-destruction? And, just as insanely, the vast majority look on blankly, continuing to go about their daily business as though nothing particularly unusual is happening.Heightened international conflict is nothing new of course. But never before has it happened when nine states (three of which are run by sociopathic dictators) have the power to destroy humanity, or a very large proportion of it, with their nuclear arsenals. Nor while a rapidly intensifying environmental crisis adds even greater jeopardy to the future of our species and countless others. The last time the risk of nuclear conflict grew in the early 1980s, it became a matter of huge popular concern. There were massive demonstrations against nuclear weapons around the world, protest camps outside military bases, and it was a recurrent theme in popular culture and political debate. People were scared and many took action.I vividly remember as a child at the time being obsessed, as were many, with the Doomsday Clock - an assessment of how close the world is to existential catastrophe by a team of scientists. Today, I doubt many are even aware of the clock’s existence let alone the fact that the hands are closer to midnight than they have ever been.Right now, you will struggle to find a mainstream newspaper columnist discussing the prospect of human extinction or ‘pluricide’ (the killing of very large numbers of people) let alone any major political mobilisation around the issue. Yes, XR and its splinter groups continue to chuck soup at paintings and cause traffic jams but these are tiny oases of action in a vast desert of dull-eyed apathy. There are some admirable efforts to raise mass consciousness like the Climate Majority Project . But given the rapid pace of deterioration in international relations and the natural world (a summer without insects and yet barely an eyebrow raised!), one can’t but marvel at how very, very slowly popular action is growing, if indeed it is growing at all.Is it really possible that the human species meets its demise not raging against the dying of the light but too distracted by Tik Tok trivia and the next Amazon purchase to notice or care? I hate to think it is so and can’t help but wonder how to wake the world up.#environment #climate #nuclearweapons #conflict #internationalrelations #extinctionhttps://lnkd.in/e64dCakF
